So I've only sewed once before, in Home Economics class in Middle School. I made a pencil pouch, or something equally pedestrian. Back then, I had a schoolmarm advising me through the whole ordeal while I thought about Pokemon Silver or Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. This time, I had Youtube and Mommy Blogs to help me out, both of which might have made me stupider (especially the mommy blogs).

So I borrowed Alex's mom's Bernina machine from the 70s and got to making my decorative towels (my sewing machine is still on the road via USPS). I have learned much in the past 5 hours:

1) I can't cut in a straight line
2) I can't sew in a straight line
3) I'm very good at threading a needle
4) Put down the foot before you start sewing

Anyways it's been nothing short of hilarious and NO I will NOT show my massacred towel as you all might lose your faith in me. Maybe if my second towel is better, I will, but first I need to grasp the concept of moving my fabric in a forward motion without sending it veering off course.

HAHAHAHA! Uh, sorry But having taught myself sewing (a continuing process, yea these many decades later) I can totally related. You'll get better. Find some better Youtubers, and some blogs dedicated to sewing, not general mommy blogs. I can't recommend any, sadly, because I stick to costuming blogs (and embellishment) these days. Best of luck

Is your material tea towels? or like terry? I am WAY into this. if it's cotton adjacent you should be able to make a one inch cut and then it will tear in a straight line

Leave enough length or hold the end of the thread when you start. Too many times I thread, line perfectly go, only to have the thread come out of the needle and I have to start all over again.
That be my only Sewing tip.

You have a great attitude for this. A lot of people can’t cope with not having Instagram-worthy results from the first attempt. Keep going!

Terry cloth is one of the more difficult fabrics to keep going in the correct direction, alas. It's got all those loops.

#4 made LOL. I haven't sewed in years, but this was always ALWAYS something I'd forget to do.
