So the HEALTH INSPECTOR is making rounds lately. For reference I got nothing to hide, I'm not worried. But another tattoo artist pulled up on the shop popping the curb and came in, telling us the city health inspector was making their rounds to shops. CUE PANIC. Most of the younger generation artists aren't freaked out, but some of the older generation artists were locking up their stuff. I have all my paperwork and I do all my forms so I'm fine lol

I got texted by a friend at another shop that some shops local to her were getting hella fined because they were forgetting to put down the lot number for their inks -- which has never been necessary before. Weird! I'm going to unfortunately start doing that, which is just more paperwork for me to do. At least I won't get fined.

This weekend I'm going to a benefit for a friend and his dog who were attacked by an offleash dog, an unfortunate problem of our city. It's also May Day! I'm making oat cakes and I'm gonna repot some plants. It's pretty boring honestly but that's fine, I'm lazy after moving and just want to sleep all the time. I'm also planning out my birthday trip, which will be to Chicago. I'm so excited.

Okay so now that I’m back from being out at a brewery with Alex for Easter, hi! Happy Easter and Sameach Pesach.

I’ve been tattooing this whole time. Drawing all the time, tattooing all the time. We lost good coworkers to go to other shops, emotions teeter, personalities clash — It’s like a bunch of kindergarteners in there. But, it is a tattoo shop. So what are you expecting honestly lol

Alex’s parents are going to be traveling the world for a year, and needed house sitters. Me and Alex’s lease was coming up and we decided to be the house sitters. It was free rent after all. I don’t mind it, it gives me the opportunity to leave Texas thank fuck hahaha the people down here are CRAZY (yes I know about all the laws. No I don’t want to talk about it. I voted.)

I’ve moved on to gardening a lot in my free time. It’s my first year as a food gardener because inflation and general interest in it, so I’ve been trying different methods and plants. Thanks to [personal profile] 8hyenas I have not horribly and irreparably ruined the garden. So far its a dying poblano that I resurrected and is now making many babies, two green bell peppers, a jalapeño, and four tomatoes (3 Roma 1 san Marzano). The poblano is producing the most right now, and one of the Romas is beginning to flower. It’s all very encouraging!

(Of course my other plants I normally talk about here are fine. They’re getting used to their new home)

Since we moved I’ve been nesting hardcore, donating stuff I don’t need, and overall trying to make someone else’s home seem like ours. We are staying on the bottom floor which we have moved around and made a little nicer and a little more homey (thankfully Alex’s parents are pretty minimalist in things they own so we aren’t competing for space). I hope shit works out!

Admittedly I don’t know what to talk about. What do people even talk about on here anymore?!

Finally back from the lake! It was nice having four days off instead of my usual two, and I plan on using it to the fullest. I don't think I have a lot to talk about but let's see ...

It was really nice hanging with friends. I brought all my art supplies to draw with, but I ended up spending most of the time crocheting. got into it on a whim after my friend's mom sent me a nice blanket, and I can't imagine how much of a labor of love this is. My fingers! But it's fun...
We all did a lot of nothing, which included drinking and video games and swimming in the lake. I don't drink much so I had maybe one drink but my friends were consistently fucked up.

I felt, in my bones, that I had to go to the antique store even if it was in bumfuck nowhere. And my bones was right, there were some great finds there but I ended up getting a beautiful rocking chair for 50 bucks. The rattan was all in good condition and the wood wasn't too damaged aside from decades of occasional knicks and scratches (nothing really noticeable). I wasn't sure if it could hold my weight (I'm about 150 lbs) but it sure can, and I rocked in it while watching Guns Akimbo last night (extremely stupid movie, unsure if I recommend).

Today I need to finish sewing my table runner, make a moss pole for Lurch (who is looming in the background of my chair pic), maybe crochet some granny squares as fall-ish potholders, and force myself to watercolor some flash I made.

Ok I'm about to run to the tattoo shop but UPDATES:

-We are going to Lake Conroe instead of the farm outside Corpus Christi. I'm sad that we aren't going to be on the farm but I've never been to a big lake before like that ... Excitement!

-I submitted for a local art show and got an email back after like 15 minutes that I was accepted. Shock and awe!

-The fursona poll reached an overwhelming verdict of Raccoon or Ring Tail Cat. I'm going with the second option, but he was raised by geese (thank you Briel)

-The hurricane barely skimmed us, we got a night of heavy rain and power outages but otherwise nothing interesting happened. Boo. However I can tattoo all this week until I go to Lake Conroe. Yay!

-I've been playing Fallout 4 and I DON'T REMEMBER FERAL GHOULS BEING SO AWFUL

-I'm sewing a Halloween table runner. It is too short for our table. I'm gonna make it work anyways.

I haven't drawn much other than tattoo stuff lately, and when I'm not at the shop I'm blobbed at home. I'm finally halfway through Cowboy Bebop. I like all the characters, but I find Ed really obnoxious. I like it, but it does feel like it has a lot of filler, like "Monster of the Week" scenarios. Granted, a lot of older animes are like that -- Like Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, etc.

Things:

-The Christmas Cactus is not dead yet. Yay!

-Me and Alex MAY be going to see Shang-Chi this weekend, which is whatever to me because I have Marvel fatigue, but I'm interested in Marvel characters that aren't cookie cutter. He's feeling pretty burnt out by Marvel too; We are hesitantly cautious. Has anyone seen it yet?

-We are going to my friend's ranch the weekend of the 18th. For those of you that have been around a long time, I'm sure you heard about the ranch. I've written a journal about being there before. It's haunted!

-My sister-in-law is in our city for a few months, so I'm getting to know her. She's surprisingly liberal (for being from bumfuck Virginia) and pretty perky. I'm going to try to go rock climbing with her sometime this week...

I REALLY need to get in the habit of posting on here again. I genuinely enjoyed detailing my days, even if it's boring af for everyone. I need to play catch up. The EFFORT. UGH.

I'm almost at the end of my tattoo apprenticeship! Yay! I have like 3 tattoos to do this week (for free), which I'm enthralled about. I wonder if I should post them? HMMM.

Alex's birthday was a few days ago and we had a gay old time. Alex had a party yesterday at a kitschy tiki bar with a bunch of his friends and he had like 7 drinks. I'm the perpetual designated driver so I was okay with it. We have so many mixers at home I figured I could make my own drinks for free lol

Let me think of something recent story worthy...

OH. When I was in bumfuck MAGA country for my birthday!

The weekend of my birthday took place in Fredericksburg, Texas. Alex had been there over 4 years ago (important!) and said it was a little German village. Awesome! Cool! I love German food and I can speak a little Deutsch. We set up an AirBnB, got a reservation for dinner, and went.

It only went downhill from there. Going to Fredericksburg, we realized how many people without masks were there ... (This is in May, when the Texas vaccination rate was awful) And there were quite a few red hats. Okay. Weird. Moving on. We walk around, notice we are getting a LOT of strange looks (we weren't even holding hands!). There's a surprisingly low amount of German ... Anything. It's all replaced with Pampered Chef and hunting stores. Alex keeps saying "I don't remember it being like this ..."

We go to the German restaurant. Notice there's not a lot of German... anything. A lot of American flags. No one has a mask. "Less Government, More Beer" banners. The German food has been replaced with burgers, fries, and chili. There's a miniscule German food section. Something is wrong.

We see a server. MAGA hat. Then, the back of his shirt, as he walks away ... It says: "It's not about who votes, it's who counts the votes - Joseph Stalin"

Okay, that's enough. I'm out of here. We leave the restaurant after a very tense and uncomfortable dinner where we notice we are being stared at by patrons. We decide we will have fun and drink at the Airbnb ... Except when we go to the Valero gas station to get drinks, Proud Boys are watching us at the end of every aisle. This is very wrong. Alex keeps apologizing, saying "It wasn't like this when I was here!"

So we leave at 4 AM because we can not handle being gay men in such a crazy yeehaw town. I looked it up, and it appears that many things in Fredericksburg were owned by German immigrants, which were recently bought out by many rich Conservatives because cheap land, and these douches replaced the unique shops with basic stores. Somewhere along the way, Qanon and Trump supporters ended up in the mix and it became a hostile scenario. I have never been so uncomfortable in a town before! It's hilarious now, imo.
