A week later from my last post and I've OFFICIALLY survived the Great Texas Freeze. I have a lot of very strong political opinions about how this is handled, and how AOC is a saint and Ted Cruz needs to be bludgeoned with a club until he stops being a pussy ass bitch leaving for Cancun when the rest of us are struggling. BUT I WON'T GO INTO THAT.

I read my last post and we continued to have spotty internet, power, and no water until late Thursday. Our water was not clean nor drinkable until late Saturday due to a water boil notice. Other places may not have water boil notices as frequently as Texas, but it's because we get brain eating amoebas in the water and you have to vigorously boil any water that goes into any orifice or NEAR any orifice, if the water filtration / power fails. So cut to me doing dishes with scalding, boiling water and waiting 2 hours for a pot to cool so I could wash my face for the night and brush my teeth. Baths were had by standing in a bathtub and pouring cold boiled water over us. Extremely unsexy. BUT IT'S OVER.

I also read that some liberals from other states are saying we deserve this for voting red. Um, what? My gay ass says otherwise. There are a huge amount of blue voters here, but I guess that narrative doesn't help their misguided anger.

I went in for work on Saturday since my tattoo mentor was back from Colorado. As the tattoo apprentice, I'm like the assistant that hands the surgeon the scalpels and tools. I'm around for tattoos and give aide; But I'm not always standing by, when I'm not immediately needed in a tattoo I clean and do my own practice tattoos. I took some photos of my setup so you guys could see!

There's my ol' girl! Alex and the tattoo team were kind enough to rally together and get me a machine to practice with for Christmas. Originally the intense vibration of a coil machine was really hard to work with, but I'm getting better slowly. The power brick on the right side powers the machine, which is connected through that heavily wrapped up clipcord. The ink cap and water (for cleaning the needle in case it's gunked up by human skin) are on the left.

Here's a closeup <3 That brass-looking thing at the top hits the bar below it, which controls the needle. It's the equivalent of a hammer hitting a nail, many times a second. I'm not going to go into the science because it's A LOT.

I have today off and I plan on cleaning up our apartment the best I can before I go to the tattoo shop the rest of the week. I also plan on playing a little Katamari, which Alex and I got drunk on Saturday and played and it was SO FUN UGH. He had never played Katamari Damacy before, which is crazy to me ... I gotta teach him how to roll.

So things only got more interesting after the power outage. My last update was on the 15th, around 4 pm. At 7:30 PM we lost power and water, and the night got wacky. It was about 17F outside, and in our hallway it was around 44F. Since we didn’t have any power, we intermittently went out to the car to charge our phones and warm up. I went out with Alex; Now something important to know about the door to our apartment garage is that on the outside it’s electronic key activated. Inside is push activated by a single bar across the door. People going out to their cars to warm up or charge would be locked out normally, but there was a mat that was placed in the crack of the door to keep it ajar so people wouldn’t be stuck in the cold. We’re having record CO2 poisonings from people staying in their cars to warm up, so I don’t like staying out there long.

So, I had just entered the car with Alex when I heard a large crack outside. I wasn’t sure if something broke (like a pipe) so I went to investigate. Turns out, an older woman was sick of the cold air blowing into the hallway and threw the mat out, effectively locking us and all the people in the cars out. I went over before she closed the door to ask what was up — She said she was sick of the cold. I mentioned all the people out in their cars would be locked out, and she said they should have just stayed inside. Now, this was Disney villain level of bitterness and it felt surreal, but I think she was at her limit from the frost. So I said I would have a solution, and spent about ten minutes in 17F weather with no light, duct taping the bar across the door into a permanent unlocked position. People outside would be able to get in, and people inside would be able to just nudge the door open. She later apologized to me while I was working and everything was fine; I’m just happy I went to investigate the sound, otherwise we would have all been locked out.

ANYWAYS, we went to sleep and woke up to no power on the 16th. The day was insanely boring — Nothing to do but be cold and make sure that the windows and doors are properly insulated. We went to Alex’s parents place for a bit since they had a gas stove, and we cooked and boiled water for broth that we drank throughout the day. When the sun went down, we went up to the roof to see what the damage was. From our area all the way to the interstate on the horizon was blacked out, not a single light to be seen. Ugh. We watched YouTube for a bit on Alex’s phone and went to bed at 8:30 PM.

When we woke up the day of the 17th, there was power and water! But only briefly — I enjoyed a cold shower (the water heater was kaput) and filled our bathtub with water (to flush the toilet) and managed to boil four pots worth of water. And it’s a good thing we did — we got an alert on our phone a while later that a water boil was in effect. So much stagnant water is a breeding ground for bacterium, so it was no surprise to me. We watched an episode of King of the Hill and had HOT COFFEE WHICH WAS SOOO NICE, but sure enough we lost power again. I at least got a stew in. Poor Alex waited on his shower, and had to pour bathtub water over himself in the shower to prevent himself from becoming a greaseball. About 5 hours later we got power again, and I’m taking the time to post this before we go under again. I’m waiting on water to come back so I can refill the bathtub and boil some more water. I’m hearing talk that this’ll last until Saturday… That’d stink.

Well, that’s it for now <3

WE SURVIVED THE GREAT TEXAS FREEZE OF '21 !

For Valentiki Day we ended up watching a King of the Hill marathon and had frito pie with Wolf brand chili. It looked like dog food but it was sooooo good. I wish I had more ... Then Alex made us a bunch of tiki drinks from the book Friend Shannon sent us ages ago. I have some pics so, hurray, let's get drunk!

The first drink is a couple's drink called the Cherie Valentino; he made it extra fancy with an ice volcano and a sugar cube doused in 151 liquor that he subsequently caught on fire. I tried the sugar cube and it tasted like lighter fluid.

Following that was our own individual drinks. Mine was the Blue Hawaii, which is by far my favorite; Alex calls it my "Vacation Juice" (from Animal Crossing). He had the Last Rites, which is just pure petrol. It was pure Martinique rum with a couple syrups, ugh.

Following THAT was Tiger Sharks, which was three different kinds of rums with lime juice. It was too strong for me, but I was two drinks in so what was a third?

Anyways around that time it was about 12 pm and we noticed that it was kind of strange looking outside. We threw on our coats (I threw on my robe, I was too lazy to find my coat and button it up) and hurried outside with the dog and some drinks -- It was sleeting!

We passed out in bed and woke up this morning to snow. Not just snow, but no running water or power. Alex wasn't quite sure what to do in this situation, but I have lived the life before in Virginia of many days of no power and freezing temperatures. It was 16 degrees at the lowest today -- We took all the blankets in the house and huddled for warmth until the power came back on, around 3:30 and now I'm here, typing this up in case I lose power again. I'm probably not going to go to the tattoo shop tomorrow because a lot of our roads are still icy and we are expected to stay below freezing temperatures. So exciting!

So we canceled the reservation for the haunted house me and Alex were going to stay in -- Just two days ago was the massive 130+ car crash in Dallas-Forth Worth, and it's expected to sleet and freeze over in my little stretch of Texas. I trust myself driving in snow or ice, and I trust Alex, but I don't trust Texas drivers with no winter tires and no common sense. I'm a little disappointed but I'll live -- I'm excited for the prospects of snow! Snow in Texas!

We're going to spend Valentine's Day at the apartment, and so far we have just been watching King of the Hill, River Monsters, and Ghost Adventures (lol) as we go about doing things, but later we are going to have Frito Pie (!) which i have never made or eaten before but I hope it isn't a catastrophe. Also, the theme of our Vday is TIKI so we have some lei and tiki drinks and a floral tablecloth and uhhhh ... Some tiki heads to hang from the ceiling. We're still deciding on the movie to watch tonight.

So far everyone is freaking out about the cold. Oh wells, a little bit of snow or ice, idk what the deal is. Alex went to the grocery store to get some stew beef yesterday and apparently people had mass bought out a lot of things -- toilet paper, milk, ground beef, green bell peppers (?). We aren't going off the grid, we are just gonna get a few days of cold weather. I HOWEVER am excited and am going to be drunk on tiki drinks the whole storm <3
